Civil engineering web portal launched

Monitoring of civil works with strain gauges or vibrating wire sensors

Gantner Instruments has launched a web portal for monitoring of large civil works like railway or highway bridges. The portal gives an overview about the condition and loadings based on strain or acceleration measurements. With the configurable dashboards a status overview is given and measurement data can be displayed in several charts. Integrated alarm threshold and reporting functions allows the monitoring of a large fleet of civil works very efficiently.

The fleet of large civil works like railway or highway bridges are getting older, loads are rising and new builds are not in sight for the whole fleet. For this reason, an effective monitoring with automated data evaluation and aggregation seems to be the answer to this problem. Gantner Instruments has a proven track record in monitoring and control of large photovoltaic power plants with the GI web portal. So what could be more obvious than combining this experience and technology with the engineering know how in fatigue monitoring and use it for civil works?

Load Monitoring and Classification

The loads induced by heavy trains or trucks to the supports or pillars of a bridge can be measured by strain gauges, displacement transducers, vibrating wires or accelerometers. These load data is aggregated by the statistic logger function of the Q.station controller. A load classification with a Rainflow algorithm is also possible directly on the controller to reduce the amount of transferred data to the portal server. That saves data volume of e.g. a 3G router and makes the data transfer also possible in areas with low speed connections.

Fleet Monitoring and Alarm handling

Once the data is imported to the Webportal all measured and calculated values are available just by opening the portal side in a standard web browser. Neither special software needs to be installed on the end user’s computer nor any security settings must be adjusted. After login a dashboard with all monitored assets is available. A color coded list with further information about the condition gives a quick overview over all assets.

The measurement data and calculated values can be visualized on charts with different resolution, graph options and zoom functions. Different views and charts with data can be configured for different users.

Integrated alarm thresholds and automated reporting functions allows the monitoring of a large fleet of civil works very efficiently. Notifications and reports can be send via e-mail. With the issue tracking or ticket system fast and target oriented repair or maintenance measures can be organized and supervised.
