In Germany, the Elbe Side Canal connects the river Elbe with the Mittelland Canal. Due to the increase of shipping traffic, a new sluice was built alongside the existing sluice at Uelzen. The new sluice, Uelzen II, is among the largest of its kind to handle domestic river traffic.

To minimize the demand for channel water when filling the lock chamber, economizing basins have been built to hold river water for filling and draining the chamber.

The floodgates of the lock chamber are hydraulically operated and under extreme weight and force when opened. The system must be continually monitored to ensure an obstruction does not block the gate opening.

BAW – the German Federal Agency for hydraulic engineering/water and shipping authority, selected Gantner Instruments strain measurement modules to monitor the force and strain on the gates of the new sluice.
