Unison Co. Ltd. is a leading company in the field of renewable wind energy. To be sure the wind turbines function properly and efficiently, numerous measurements are continually taken to monitor the performance of the turbine. Weather measurements such as humidity, air pressure, ambient temperature, rain, wind direction, and speed must be measured to understand the environmental conditions. Electrical quantities such as the generated 3-phase voltage, current, frequency and the resulting power, as well as the mechanical quantities such as material strain in the flap fixings, in the rotating shaft, the azimuth angle of the flaps, and the position of the turbine head are also measured.

Unison selected Gantner Instruments to provide the DAQ and measurement system to monitor and control its 2MW wind turbines. With blade distances of more than 100 meters total, Gantner e.bloxx recorded, conditioned, and transmitted 4 frequency signals, 9 voltages, 1 Pt100 signal, 14 strain signals, 2 signals of strain gauge sensors, and 2 incremental signals.

The remotely detected and conditioned data, with a frequency response of 100Hz, are transmitted via the test controller e.gate to a PC. The results are used to control the wind turbine and the power feet into the net, or to deactivate the system in the event of heavy weather or storms.

A key feature of the e.bloxx is high temperature stability providing accurate measurements in the intense summer heat or freezing cold of winter. Gantner’s e.series measurement modules were easy to install on the rotating shaft in the generator, and highly flexible regarding the connectivity of sensors and configuration.

The challenge arises within the required accuracy and the high temperature stability (outdoor in summer and winter) the synchronized measurement in a remote setup with a frequency response of 100 Hz. A further argument for the e.series is the easy installation of the modules on the rotating shaft in the generator and the high flexibility regarding the connectivity of sensors and configuration.

The calibration of the strain measurement was done by loading the flaps with real death loads which was applied by a crane. The calibration was done in the vertical direction with a diverter pulley in the horizontal direction.
